MONTANA Skins

For more than 75 years Montana has produced climbing skins for skis.
It started with seal skins wrapped around the skis. Today the skins are mostly fixed to the skis with special glue.

Our base material has its origin in the textile industry where the plush is woven in a special way, so it is gliding one way and stopping the other. To give the plush stability it has to be laminated with another textile such as coton or polyamid cloth.

Base material that we use:

Mohair Sprint 100%

Mohair Sprint, skins made of 100% natural mohair plush that comes from the mohair goat. It is a very soft cloth and is also used for furniture.
A big advantage of mohair skins is their natural property: the hair is water repellent because it had to protect the animal from cold and wet with a cover of fat. Thus the risk of building clogs on the skins is reduced.
Thanks to a special weaving technique the skins can be produced with high density that means there is more material in the plush which makes them last longer and especially in cold snow conditions significantly increased gliding capacities. Mohair skins also tend to get even faster with age.

Mohair 100%

Mohair Mix

Mohair Mix skins made of mohair mainly, reinforced with nylon (30%), it has more or less the same properties as the pure mohair skin is not as soft, but a very good mixture to be a real allrounder well balanced with durability, good climbing and gliding properties on a wide range of snow conditions.

Montanyl

Montanyl, skins made of pure nylon, durable and with excellent climbing properties. Gliding capacity is very good in soaking wet snow because of its rough structure compared to the mohair skins. Nylon skins need care that means they should be waxed with either hard wax or fluid wax.
